At Ádivin, we work with a range of textile substrates for printing and manufacturing visual communication products. Some of our solutions are available in fabrics with fire-retardant properties and come with specific technical documentation.
If you are a graphic printer, sign maker, advertising agency or distributor, having the right fabric and the documentation certifying its performance characteristics can be particularly important for projects at trade fairs, events, commercial premises and other venues where fire safety requirements apply.
That is why you need to understand what it means for a fabric to be fire-retardant, whether or not you need a certificate to prove this, and which fabric to choose depending on the application, project or occasion.
For a fabric to be fire-retardant means that it is a woven or knitted fabric that exhibits certain characteristics in relation to fire behaviour.
There is a strict, regulated classification system for the reaction of any fabric to fire, taking into account smoke and burning droplets or particles.
Usually, when this characteristic is stated, the fabric has undergone standardised tests to obtain a specific fire reaction classification. In Europe, the fire reaction classification comprises different classes — A1, A2, B, C, D, E and F — and certain classes also include the ‘S’ classification for smoke production and the ‘D’ classification for burning droplets or particles.
This question is primarily answered by taking into account the intended use and location of the product. Depending on the location, specific safety requirements may be established which may or may not require the products to be certified.
In these projects, it is common for the end client or the organiser to request the relevant documentation regarding the fire performance of the material used.
Some examples:
Check the fire reaction classifications for some of our main fabrics and find out what each one means.
| Fabric | Clasification | What does it means |
|---|---|---|
| 100% polyester flag fabric, 115 g/m² | B-s1,d0 | European fire reaction classification. B indicates the fire reaction class; s1 indicates low smoke production; and d0 indicates the absence of burning droplets or particles during the test. |
| 100% polyester waterproof fabric | B1 – DIN 4102 | Classification B1 in accordance with the German standard DIN 4102, corresponding to materials considered to be flame-resistant within this classification system. |
